Apprenticeship Alex

Alex Weegram, Apprentice QS at our Wynyard office

Before I started my apprenticeship with Gleeson Homes I was already enrolled onto a construction course at college and knew I wanted to go into quantity surveying.

Thanks to the support of my colleagues I quickly settled into my new role. I realised straight away that the office worked as a team and made me feel welcome from day one. After a few weeks I gained more knowledge of the quantity surveying profession and started to take on responsibilities of my own.

I have now been here for nearly two years and am gaining new skills all the time. A lot of my work involves creating and maintaining relationships with sub-contractors which I enjoy and it has helped me learn more about the build processes on site. Working in this environment does come with its challenges and there are times that I need help, so I am lucky to have a mentor with me the majority of the time. Getting the weekly subcontract payments done on time can be a struggle but that is where the team ethic in the office really helps.

Although the role is mainly office based I do get the opportunity to get out onto the sites and see the work for myself, I enjoy it as it gives me the opportunity to meet new people and talk to the site staff. If I was to give some advice to someone interested in starting a Gleeson apprenticeship, it would be to go for it; there is no better place to learn than in the workplace and Gleeson is a great place to do it.
